The Queensland Manufacturing Institute (QMI)

Has been proud to host the Queensland Governments’ Gateway to Industry Schools Project (GISP) for Advanced Manufacturing, formally Manufacturing and Engineering, since 2009.

In 2020, our GISP transitioned to focus on the technologies being adopted by the advancing manufacturing sector. This is the common element amongst the 16+ industries in manufacturing.

 

The GISP for Advanced Manufacturing is a component of a statewide industry engagement and workforce development strategy to support the long-term development of a highly-skilled workforce in Queensland.  The Queensland government is committed to growing manufacturing in this state as a critical driver of innovation and productivity in the economy. QMI assists to deliver this vision.

The program provides industry insights, evidence and opportunities for industry and the education sector to work together to deliver outcomes for school teachers, students, local communities and business.

Queensland Reference Group (QRG) – Manufacturing & Engineering

The GISP for Advanced Manufacturing is steered by the Queensland Reference Group (QRG). This ecosystem includes key partners from government and non-government school sectors and industry sectors including representation from Industry 4.0, Advanced Manufacturing, Heavy Vehicles, Defence, Aerospace, Textile, Food Processing, Mining, Biomedical, Recreational Vehicle, Rail, Furnishings, Manufacturing and Engineering. This group of industry professionals meet quarterly and are dedicated to supporting Queensland teachers and students by collaborating and innovating.

Attracting more young people into the advancing manufacturing and engineering sectors has been an issue in recent years. Through QMI, the GISP project helps to:

  •  Raise the profile and diversity of careers in the advanced manufacturing sector.

  • Provide professional development and currency opportunities (in industry) for Queensland school teachers contextualisation of advanced manufacturing practices and applications incorporating robotics, STEAM and coding. 

  • Develop and implement a range of manufacturing and engineering-related activities across industrial technology and design, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) and other key learning curriculum areas.

  • Create opportunities for work experience, structured work placements, school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, full-time apprenticeships, and pathways to university in preparation for trade, para-professional and professional careers.

  • Celebrate and share student, teacher, school and industry experiences to ensure young people have the knowledge and experience to make informed decisions about their future.
